A maintenance audit is a process of analysis to which is submits a maintenance department of with the objective of determine possible improvements in the management that is performed in said department. This process can be carried out by own technicians, who autoanalizan the management carried out in it, by technicians from other departments of the same company, or, as it is more usual, by external technical, that if they are well selected and have a clear and valid methodology can provide a vision more impartial and less contaminated by every day.

A maintenance audit consists basically in compare the situation existing in a company determined with a model of excellence or of class world, with a form of manage that is considered excellent. The audit proposed in this guide is based on the concepts of asset management and standards PAS 55 and ISO 55000, but with much more practical vision (but compatible with previous standards) called maintenance 3.0, to represent the third generation of maintenance.

Maintenance department is divided into a total of 15 areas of management, with the objective of analysing in detail each area separately. The location of each area is compared with a model of excellence in the management of this area, evaluating a range of aspects in each of them. The questionnaire or checklist of the audit is undoubtedly the focus of the analysis process, and is made up of more than 200 points
